Hip-Hop songwriter KLOKWIZE brings substance, positive message and full live band to his new album 'The Art of Falling Apart'
“You've been through everything I’m talking about on this album, trust me.” Critically-acclaimed alt hip-hop songwriter KLOKWIZE thinks music should be “relatable” and “heartfelt,” and on April 20th 2014, his new sophomore album ‘The Art of Falling Apart’ will be released in that honest spirit. The album features a different approach from most hip-hop records in 2014: a full live band, one that he also performs across the country with, and inventive songwriting that is thoughtful and positive.
Klokwize’ (real name: Patrick James, a Connecticut native) last retail album, 2012’s ‘Hood Hippie: The Album’ was a breakout success for the young performer and his live band. Two of the album’s lead singles were quickly picked up for national television spots on the ESPN network, including ‘First Take’ and ‘The X-Games’; The album ended up on countless critic’s year-end lists, including RapReviews.com, LocalBandReview.com and CT.com; Klokwize was nominated for ‘Hip Hop Artist of the Year’ in the Connecticut Music Awards in both 2012/2013 consecutively.
“I love working under pressure, so I decided instead of trying to re-trace the same type of album, let’s make a whole new thing. Let’s go deeper. We've all dealt with the bittersweet feelings of seeing relationships fall apart, our world around us falling apart, but somehow feeling more alive than ever. I was really influenced by the tragedies and paranoia we live in every day in this generation, and how we get past that and still love eachother. It’s a really liberating album and experience.”
That theme certainly shines through in the album’s well-written lyrics. ‘I Prefer You’ bounces with melodic reggae influence while Klok croons:
‘They could aim that rocket at my home /
And tell the President it’s over, we all gone /
If it was lovin’ you to death or stoppin’ a bomb –
I’d prefer you – I’d prefer you.’
‘When I See Ya’ goes more personal, with quips like,
‘If the plan was to get to know her /
I guess I got pre-occupied with the devil on her shoulder /
Never really sober, shorty’s got a lifestyle /
And I just got what’s left of the pieces of my life now.’
The music of ‘The Art of Falling Apart’ is edgy, intricately-produced and deceptively catchy. It’s no wonder the album’s first single, ‘Build & Destroy’ made the ballot for ‘Song of the Year’ at this year’s Connecticut Music Awards. Three music videos have been released in support of the album, and Klokwize sets out on a release tour throughout the Northeast starting April 17th in Boston MA.
He was recently seen with his live band premiering songs from the new album in his live sets, including the Trinity Hip Hop Festival alongside Talib Kweli earlier this month, a direct support set for Oscar-winning superstars Three 6 Mafia in March, and a feature on select dates of the 2013 Vans Warped Tour.
“I believe in the type of investment somebody has in you as an entertainer after you chop it up with them in person, not on a message board. Let’s have an experience together. I wanna hear why certain songs affected you.”
‘The Art of Falling Apart’ will be released April 20th 2014 on all digital music retail outlets, including iTunes, Amazon, Spotify and more. Information and media can be found at www.klokwize.net
